Harry Potter Cupcakes

Be prepared all, my geeky side is about to come out with this post!  I had been trying to figure out what to make next for my blog, but couldn’t think of anything.  Then one of my friends suggested showing my decorating side instead of just my baking side, which I haven’t been doing.  Then the idea hit me.  Harry Potter cupcakes!  In honor of the last Harry Potter movie opening, I decided to make some themed cupcakes!  I love making cupcakes, so I was really excited to get started.  In all, it was a two-day project.  The first night I made the cupcakes and the second night I made the frosting and decorated the cupcakes.

The recipe I used was out of a cupcake book, that my sister got me, for Golden cupcakes.  All I wanted was a simple recipe so that I could focus on the decorations.  Here’s the recipe:

Golden Cupcakes (I made half this recipe and it yield 12 cupcakes)

  • 2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 large eggs, separated, at room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 3 cups flour
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk
  1. Preheat the oven to 350.  Insert cupcake liners into the cupcake pan.
  2. In a large bowl cream the butter and sugar until fluffy.  Add the egg yolks and beat well.  Add the vanilla and mix well.
  3. In a separate bowl combine the flour, baking powder and salt.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with the milk.  Mix well.
  5. In a clean mixing bowl, whip the egg whites on high until stiff peaks form.  With a rubber spatula, gently fold the egg whites into the batter.
  6. Fill the cupcake liners 1/2 to 3/4 full.  Bak for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.  Cool cupcakes in the pan.
Buttercream frosting recipe  (this is a half recipe)
Beat 1/2 cup butter, 1/4 cup milk, 1/8 tsp salt, 3/4 tsp vanilla and a 1/2 pound of powdered sugar in a mixing bowl.  Gradually add another 1/2 pound of powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
To decorate the cupcakes, I cut off the tops of the cupcakes so that they were level with the cupcake liner.

Then, I frosted the cupcakes with the buttercream frosting.  Next, I rolled out some white fondant and cut out circles that fit the top of the cupcakes.  I did this so that the decorations could be the focus of each cupcake.

I created four different Harry Potter decorations out of fondant and gumpaste; a lightening bolt, a Gryffindor scarf, Harry’s round glasses and a wand.  Let’s face it, my wand making skills aren’t up to par with Ollivander’s, but I think my first try came out pretty good!

Overall, I am so beyond thrilled at how these cupcakes turned out!  Even though the decorating took the most time, it was by far the most fun.  Now that my geeky side has officially come out, I hope you enjoy these pictures!!

Amy those are ADORABLE! I wish I would’ve seen this earlier, I thought I had signed up for email updates, but I guess I clicked the wrong thing!

I love how you leveled the cupcakes, it really does help to feature all the decorations! 🙂
